Notes: [Information supplied by Christine Hird, who found it in Daniel's
service records at the Public Record Office, Kew] Daniel was a Gunner in
the Royal Artillery. He was discharged from 10th Battalion RA on 13th July
1852 on medical grounds, being unfit for future service due to 'Chronic Rheumatism
& Varicose Veins'. Daniel had served for 21 years and 178 days.
Among his various postings, he served 5 years in Ceylon, where his son John was
born c.1842. Daniel was invalided home from Ceylon in 1846, having suffered
from frequent bouts of dysentry But the voyage home restored him to health,
and he continued to serve until his legs became too painful.
Daniel's conduct had been exemplary, and he received 4 good conduct badges and
a long service medal (however, he never rose above the rank of gunner).
When Daniel was discharged, he was 41 years of age, standing 5' 8½", with
grey hair and eyes, and a fair complexion.
