Notes: By the time of the 1871 census, Henry had changed his surname to
De WITTE, as had his sister, Letitia. The reason they did so is unknown,
but both used it thereafter, with one exception. At her 1875 marriage,
Letitia reverted to WITT, although she was De WITTE again when her children'
births were registered. Their mother, Selina, used WITT throughout her
married life, but her death was registered as De WITTE. The informant
was presumably one of her two children, because Selina was still a WITT in her
will.
According to the 1900 US census, Henry arrived in the US in 1873. He married
for the first time in 1874, to Erna MULLER They appear to have had no children.
He became a naturalized US citizen in 1893. His first wife died
in 1897, and he returned to England the same year. Before long, he was
back in the US, and his future second wife, Charlotte HALLIWELL, is presumed
to have accompanied him, because they married in New York in 1900. They
stuck around for the 1900 census, but then came back to England, because they
were in Southport, Lancashire (where Henry's mother still lived) for the 1901
census. Some time later, the couple are thought to have migrated to Australia.
Charlotte returned to England in 1910, and was around for the 1911 census,
but Henry seems to have stayed in Australia.
