INDEX

[349] Notes: George was named as one of the joint executors on his brother William WITT's will

Occupation
1820 Clerk in the Customs (baptism of son George Henry Smith)
1838 Customs Office (daughter Bessy's death certificate)
1845 Landing Waiter in the Customs (wife Margaret's death certificate)
1849 Landing Surveyor (marriage of son George Henry Smith, when he is incorrectly, and inexplicably, named as George Henry)
1851 Landing Surveyor HM Customs (census)
1856 Gentleman (marriage to Eliza IVEY)
1861 (Apr) Superannuated Customs Officer (census)
1861 (Sep) Gentleman (marriage of daughter Charlotte)
1871 A Gentleman (death certificate)

[345] Source: Approximate year of birth only, calculated from:
1851 census of Poulton cum Seacombe, Cheshire - aged 50, born Newport Isle of Wight [actually aged 58]
1861 census of Tranmere, Cheshire - aged 67, born Isle of Wight

[346] Source: Information supplied by Ann Barrett

[347] Source: Copy of GRO death certificate, held by David Witt. George WITT died aged 76, a gentleman, of "myelitis disease between axis and atlas - 3 months".   See George WITT's will.

[348] Source: Scanned copy of burial register, online at Findmypast.co.uk.  George was 76, and lived at Rock Ferry, Cheshire.

[11432] Notes: Possibly George WITT & Margaret LAYE, who married at St Denis, York, on 18 May 1829, aged 30 and 26, respectively (online transcript at Ancestry. co.uk).  But bearing in mind daughter Charlotte's middle name, Margaret's maiden name might have been GIBSON.

[11420] Source: Copy of GRO marriage certificate, held by David Witt. George was "Widower, Gentleman, resident at Wallasey, Cheshire, son of William WITT, Gentleman", and Eliza was "Spinster, daughter of Thomas IVEY, Officer in the Navy". Witnesses were John WHITE, Elizabeth Peak RATSEY, and Charles RATSEY. After George WITT's death in Cheshire in 1871, his widow Eliza returned to the Isle of Wight, and stayed with Rosa RATSEY, so there is possibly a WITT/RATSEY of IVEY/RATSEY connection that we don't know about, yet.
