[10684] Notes: On 19th March 1834, when the ship Samuel Robertson arrived in New York on its journey from London, England, among the 106 passengers aboard, was the MATTHEWS family, comprising Ann 48, the mother, and her children, William 21, John 18, Ephraim 14, Ann 12, Eliza 6, and Caroline 4. The father of the chidren, and husband of Ann, Ephraim MATTHEWS senior, was not with the family, but had presumably made the journey at an earlier date, in order to pave the way for his family's arrival.

Notes: Research into this part of the family was initially carried out
by Brian Mayes. This was part of the explanation that Brian sent:
"... I can assist you with details of John NEWTON.
He was baptised at Great Cressingham on 1 Dec 1811, the 'baseborn' son of Martha
NEWTON. Martha appears to have had a very interesting career as a mother
because apart from John, she had 7 other children before getting married.
They were baptised in either Great Cressingham or Saham Toney. I have details
of all of their marriages and children. She eventually married the father
of at least the last 5, and probably the first 2 including your John, on 27 Nov
1832 at Saham Toney. She married William FEAKES, a farmer ..... Martha
died in Saham Toney on 9 Dec 1852, aged 72, and William died there on 30 May
1858, aged 75.
... She [Martha] states in one record that she was born at Great Cressingham,
and in another that she was born at Saham Toney. Yet she appears in neither
register. I think, with reasonable grounds, that she was born in Great
Cressingham in 1783, the daughter of Thomas NEWTON and Martha MECK, and was
therefore the sister of my 4 x great-grandfather Robert NEWTON.
Thomas and Martha had 8 children between 1770 and 1789 in Great Cressingham,
but no Martha, and none between 1779 and 1785, so I have assumed that for some
reason her baptism was not recorded. Again I have details of all of their
children and their marriages and children and grandchildren. It has produced
many indivduals straight out of Dickens, e.g. Theophilus GOOCH, Jemima BILVERSTONE,
and Walter KNOOPWOOD, all related to you if you accept the above."
Martha was intended to be a beneficiary of her husband William's 1848 will, but she died before him. William Feakes' will has rather put paid to the idea that he might have been father to all Martha Newton's children. William left nothing to Martha's first three children, all of whom were still alive & kicking at nearby Great Cressingham. We may never know the identity of the father (or fathers) of Martha's first three children, Mary, Harriet, and John.

1858 Death certificate - aged 72
[673] Source: Copy of GRO death certificate. For some peculiar reason, Martha is recorded as 'Wife of Thomas Feakes, Farmer' NOT William Feakes, Farmer. The informant was also named as Thomas Feakes, but he could not sign, and made his mark 'X' instead. William Feakes was unable to sign his name on his 1848 will, and was almost certainly still illiterate when his wife Martha died in 1852. However, it does seem surprising that he did not realise that the registrar recorded him as Thomas Feakes!

[9205] Notes: After the death of first husband, William ALLEN, in 1746, Elizabeth was granted Administration of his estate, along with John CASHIN of Reading, Berkshire. She was also a named beneficiary in second husband John FARMER's will, proved in 1775, together with several members of her husband's family.

[9204] Source: Berkshire Burial Index, online at Findmypast.co.uk, which records that Elizabeth was a widow.
[11658] Notes: No marriage has been found, but the bride must have been Elizabeth PRECY/PRASCEY. In the will of Edward PRASCEY, proved in 1780, two of William & Elizabeth ALLEN's children, Frances SILLS and John ALLEN, were named as Edward PRASCEY's niece and nephew. The only explanation can be that their mother, Elizabeth, was Edward's sister, or more correctly, his half-sister. Three more of William & Elizabeth's children (Richard ALLEN, Sarah KEEN, and Jane CLARK) were also beneficiaries of Edward PRASCEY's will, but were not actually recorded as his nephew and nieces.
