Notes: Edward POPLE was the third-born of the seven children of Robert
POPLE & Emma PORTER, who had married at Dorchester in 1864. In 1890, aged
18, Edward joined the Scots Guards, and served until 1902, including in South
Africa during the Boer War.
On 24 Feb 1895, at St Peter's Church, Dorchester, Edward married Sarah Louise
CROSS, 24, daughter of John Robert & Elizabeth CROSS. Edward & Sarah went
on to have 5 children William Edward in 1895, Hilda Bessie in 1896, Gertrude
Waltina in 1898, Winifred Henrietta in 1899, and Francis Henry in 1902.
Sadly, Sarah Louise died in 1902, in the same quarter that the last child was
born, aged only 32.
