[3541] Notes: Doreen Oakman sent the following information about John EDWARDS. It was written by another of Doreen's correspondents, whose identity is unknown to me.....

JOHN EDWARDS

Information obtained from a notebook at the Hertford Record Office kept by the Vicar of Therfield [Rev. John G HALE] on his parishioners.

John Edwards alias Racker illegitimate son of Eleanor Edwards (by a man named Racker) born 1801 and baptised 11 December 1801 at St Mary's Church, Therfield, Hertfordshire.

"John Edwards stole a horse belonging to Mr Fordham - on the morning of his marriage (to Mary Knights, 11 December 1824). Directly they had reached the house after the service, he was apprehended by the constable and subsequently tried and transported - he was never heard of again. Soon after the marriage his child Eliza was born, daughter of John and Mary Edwards.

Eliza baptised 12 January 1825 married 10 October 1846 William Bullard and was buried 25 February 1856.

Mary Edwards the wife then cohabited with John Rainer, by whom she had many children who are christened sometimes as Rainer sometimes as Racker sometimes as Edwards. She was at length on 11 March 1854 married to John Rainer (Rayner). The sons are generally known now by the name of Rainer."

Extract from 'The County Chronicle and Weekly Advertiser', Essex, Herts, Kent, etc. Tuesday 1st March 1825 -

"John Edwards alias John Retcher (Racker) was indicted for stealing, at Therfield, a brown gelding, the property of John Fordham, on 4[sic] December 1824. The prisoner said nothing in his defence. He was found guilty and a sentence of death was recorded."

The indictment I found at Kew recorded that the horse was valued at 7 pounds and he was sentenced to hang but was reprieved to transportation for life.

I have not found out where John was between conviction and transportation on 1 December 1825.

John was transported to Van Dieman's Land (Tasmania) for life on the ship 'Woodman' which sailed from London in December 1825. It took 144 days via the Cape of Good Hope arriving at Hobart in May 1826. John must have nearly died on board as he was admitted to the ship's hospital on 9 March. The Medical and Surgical Journal for the 'Woodman' describes in great detail the fever he was suffering from and there is a vivid description of his condition, treatment and diet daily from 12 March to 14 March then 21 March and he was discharged cured on 2 April 1826 at his own request.

I have not found his Port of Entry details but the Tasmanian Genealogical Sciety have sent me details of his conduct record and where he was assigned also a description. He was only 5 feet, two and a half inches tall dark complexion and dark brown hair and hazel eyes and a labourer.

He was assigned to a William Lawrence at Norfolk Plains who had a land grant 'Formosa' in the area now known as Longford.

He received a conditional pardon on 28 June 1838 but before that in 1828 he received 25 lashes for disobeying orders and neglect of duty and 50 lashes "for threatening to knock his overseer down with a whip stick". He was also in trouble for disorderly conduct in being absent from church muster. The photocopy is rather difficult to read.

A John Edwards died aged 42 of pneumonia in 1843, the informant of his death was William Benson assistant colonial surgeon in Launceston. This age ties in with his date of birth.

As far as I know there were no children in Tasmania and I felt quite sad that my research had to end there.
