Notes: Hannah's surname and origins present a problem. Jacob TRANCHARD
(of Yarcombe, Devon) married Hannah SYMS (of Chard) at Taunton in 1816.
It seems logical that they were the Jacob & Hannah TRANCHARD who registered births
of 4 children at Taunton Baptist Chapel during the folowing 10 years. But
the register records that the mother of the fourth child was Hannah LINDEY of
Combe St Nicholas.
What is going on here...? Did Jacob marry twice, both times to a Hannah...?
If so, no burial can be found at Taunton of the 'first' Hannah, although there
was a burial of Ann TRANCHARD on 10 Mar 1823, aged 22. She could be the
'first' Hannah (Hannah SYMS), but would have been only 15 or 16 when she married.
That is certainly possible. It depends on how likely it might be that
Hannah was buried as Ann. When the second (or only) Hannah died, she was
registered as Anna, so a Hannah buried as Ann is not such a far-fetched idea.
The situation is further complicated by the absence (so far) of a marriage between
Jacob TRENCHARD and Hannah LINDEY.

If Hannah's 1861 birthplace really was Niver (i.e. Niver Hill), it is nowhere
near Chard or Combe St Nicholas, and may dictate a rethink of the identity of
Jacob TRENCHARD's wife or wives.
[1350] Source: Copy of GRO death certificate, which includes a couple of anomalies, but is definitely the right one. Firstly, despite her name being previously written as Hannah on numerous occasions, she is Anna on the certificate. But the informant was not a relative, and in an age when most people were illiterate, the two names were basically interchangeable. Secondly, the certificate gives her age as 88, which appears to be wildly inaccurate. Judging by her age at the 1841-1861 census, she was actually only about 80. As with the odd spelling of her name, this can probably be blamed on an ill-informed informant.

Syms of the Parish of Chard in Somersetshire, both resident in this Parish, were
married in this Church by Banns this twenty fifth Day of December in the Year
One thousand eight hundred and sixteen - By me L. H. Clapp Vicar."
Jacob Trenchard signed the register, and Hannah Syms made her mark 'X'.
Witnesses were Ephraim Trenchard and J. Long (the latter was witness to another
marriage on the same page, which probably indicates that he was not connected
to the bride or groom, but just a regular witness - maybe the Parish Clerk, or
similar).
