INDEX

[184] Notes: Evelyn's father, Edward WATSON, a butler, is reputed to have died soon after she was born, and Evelyn was brought up by an 'aunt & uncle' at Llanrwst, in North Wales.  From the 1901 census, we know that they were Edwin & Ruby CLUTTERBUCK, and that Evelyn was recorded as Edwin's niece.  A search found Edwin & Ruby's 1888 marriage, and the certificate revealed that the bride was Ruby BLOWER - same surname as Evelyn's mother Alice BLOWER - but Ruby's father was Thomas BLOWER, a farmer.  On Alice's 1896 marriage certificate, her father was Robert BLOWER, a carpenter.

So, Evelyn's mother and 'aunt' had the same surname - BLOWER - but they were seemingly not sisters.  Neither were they cousins, as Alice's father Robert was an only child (he had one sister, but she died young).  According to the census, Alice and Ruby BLOWER were born in adjacent Norfolk villages - Alice, 1862 at Saham Toney, and Ruby c.1866 at Watton - so they must surely be distant cousins...?

Efforts have been made to trace Ruby Blower's origins further, but without success.   There is no sign of Ruby BLOWER in the GRO births index c.1866, and no sign of her, or her father Thomas, in the 1881 census index.

When she was about 19, Evelyn decided to convert to Roman Catholicism, and when 'aunt and uncle' heard of this, they threw her out.  Evelyn went back to live with her mother, Alice Blower, who was by then married to Thomas Butler, and had two children by him.

[181] Source: Copy of GRO birth certificate .... which says 19 Sep 1892, but this was a little 'white lie' to escape prosecution for failing to register the birth within 42 days - she was actually born 8 Sep 1892.  Date of registration is 02 Nov 1892 - exactly 42 days (the legal limit) after the alleged date of birth.
Approximate year of birth calculated from:
1901 census of Llanrwst, Denbighshire, Wales - aged 8, born Crowthorne, Berkshire
