Notes: Possibly Eliza Balis/Balts/Bolts? In 1881, the family had a 72
year old visitor, Jane Balis/Balts/Bolts, born just plain 'Essex', formerly a
dressmaker. Even though Jane is not recorded as William Barker's mother-in-law,
it is possible that she is Eliza's mother?

Source: Marriage register image, at TheGenealogist.co.uk (original records
held at The National Archives). Theirs was a 'clandestine' Fleet Marriage,
which has all sorts of connotations, but such marriages were very common at
the time. To quote from the Wikipedia
page, "In the 1740s, over half of all London weddings were taking place in
the environs of the Fleet Prison. The majority of Fleet marriages were
for honest purposes, when couples simply wanted to get married quickly or at
low cost." The register entry reads :-
"Charles Prasey of St Giles Cripplegate Dyer & Batchelour
& Sarah Eales of the same Spinster, Anth. Shellburn (officiating minister)"

Source: Copy of GRO
birth certificate. Surname recorded as MITCHAM, which must be a corruption
of MEACHEM. The birth date on the certificate is two days later than the
date given at baptism. As the certificate date is exactly 6 weeks/42 days
(the legal time limit) before registration, it does look a bit suspicious, and
it is likely that the baptism register has Elizabeth Ann's correct birth date.
Approximate year of birth calculated from:
1871 census of Great Ilford, Essex - aged 6,
born Newington Middlesex (see NOTE below)
1891 census of Plaistow, Essex - aged 25,
born London Shoreditch
1901 census of West Ham, Essex - aged 35,
born Ldon City Rd
NOTE: At the 1871 census of Great Ilford, Elizabeth DAY was recorded as 'aged
3, born Plumstead, Kent', and her sister Sarah was recorded as 'aged 6, born
Newington, Middlesex'. It is assumed that the enumerator got the two girls
mixed up, because Sarah was definitely the one who was aged 3, and born at Plumstead.
Therefore, Elizabeth is presumed to have been aged 6, and born at 'Newington,
Middlesex', which creates a problem in itself, because there is no such place.
Presumably, the enumerator misheard or misunderstood what he was told (or couldn't
read his own rough notes), and so New Inn... became Newing, etc, etc.
